Nearly a Year Later, Phantasmal Flames Still Belongs to Charizard

Phantasmal Flames celebrates its first birthday next month, and what a year it has been. The second main set of the Mega Evolution era arrived on November 14, 2025 with 130 cards, six Mega Evolution ex headliners, and one very famous fire breathing dragon. Twelve months on, it remains the benchmark set of the Mega Evolution era, and its prices tell the story.

Sealed Product Keeps Climbing

Here is where things stand, per TCGplayer Market data checked on October 7. A sealed booster box sits around $391 ($557 CAD). Elite Trainer Boxes go for about $154 ($220 CAD), the Pokémon Center version around $286 ($408 CAD), and the Booster Bundle about $84 ($120 CAD). Single packs change hands near $12 ($17 CAD). Compare that to launch, when the ETB was $49.99 ($71 CAD) and the bundle was $26.94 ($38 CAD). Most sealed product now sells for roughly three times its launch price.

Restocks have been sporadic through 2026, and the set has not been announced as out of print, so most buyers now shop the secondary market. It is a good reminder that older Mega Evolution product is getting harder to track down, not easier.

Two Cards Run the Show

Charizard has four prints in this set, but two of them do all the heavy lifting. The Special Illustration Rare Mega Charizard X ex (125/094), with the blue flame artwork of Charizard, Charmeleon, and Charmander together, commands about $661 ($942 CAD) raw. The gold Mega Hyper Rare (130/094) follows at around $215 ($307 CAD). Every other card in the set sits at $21 or under. Dawn SIR is near $18, Mega Sharpedo ex SIR around $17, Rotom ex SIR about $13. In short, this is a one dragon set.

The Odds Have Not Moved

TCGplayer opened more than 5,000 Phantasmal Flames packs and published the numbers. A Special Illustration Rare shows up about once in 80 packs, but a specific one like the Charizard averages one in 400, which is roughly eleven booster boxes. The gold Mega Hyper Rare appears about once in 1,260 packs, working out to about one per 35 booster boxes.

That is a lot of cardboard between you and the big hits. Chasing a single card through sealed product was never the cheap route, and the math says the same thing now as it did at launch.

Worth Your Attention?

If you love the chase, Mega Evolution ex cards, or that Charizard artwork, absolutely. The set still feels like an event every time a pack gets opened. If you want the SIR itself, singles remain the saner path. One year in, the flames are still burning, and they show no sign of going out.
